BookVoyager is operated by the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and protect your personal information.
1. Information We Collect
We collect information you provide when creating an account, including your email address, name, role (student or teacher), and institution (for teachers). We also collect usage data such as reading progress, comprehension check results, and content you upload. This data is used to operate the Service and, with your consent, for anonymized research in language learning and reading analytics.
2. How We Use Your Data
Your data is used to provide and improve BookVoyager, personalize your experience, and enable features such as progress tracking and comprehension checks. With your explicit consent during sign-up, we may use anonymized or aggregated data for research purposes. We do not sell your personal information.
3. Data Sharing
We may share anonymized or aggregated data with research partners. Personal data is shared only as required by law, with your explicit consent, or as necessary to operate the Service (e.g., teachers may view student progress within their classes). The University of British Columbia complies with the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
4. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Passwords are stored in hashed form.
5. Your Rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data. You can export your data from the settings page within the Service. For privacy requests, contact the Department of Language and Literacy Education (see Contact below).
